Book Legends of Rock & Roll - Ringo Starr (Before, During & After the Beatles) Review :

I've only read one other of the author James Hoag's tributes to Rock and Roll Legends. That was on John Lennon. What stands out to me in both books is the author's genuine fondness for the musicians he writes about and his pride at having been allowed to live in the same time frame as these greats. He seems to breath in their very essence and lives their lives along with the reader. His commentaries are always gentle and he stands genuinely as a non-critical observer, almost as a beloved family member, taking personal pride in their accomplishments. He makes a lot of numbers in the pop charts, dates and data come alive with his love. I hopped over to his website (listed in his book) to see what it was about and found the same warmth, great videos... check it out. And if you love the Beatles and especially Ringo, pick up this book. I smiled throughout.
I've read all four of this author's books on the Beatles. Since I'm part of the Beatles generation - and can remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show - these books gave me a real walk down memory lane. I have to admit, too, that of the Fab Four, Ringo was always my least favorite. Paul was cute, Lennon was brilliant, Harrison was moody but Ringo was . . . just Ringo. However, after reading this book I had a much better feel for the guy who took Pete Best's place in the band. After the break-up I followed the other three but not Ringo - in reading this book I see that I missed a whole chapter in the Beatles' evolution. Good job!
