David Hoppe's memoir is fascinating, not just for the memorable characters of his family, but for his insights into the "frontier" of the developing middle class suburbs northwest of Chicago. I went to high school there, but didn't live there in the 1950's, when some of the most interesting action takes place. David is a brilliant writer. His prose is always engaging, colorful, literate and accessible. It's the kind of read that makes you want to spend more time with the author, to see what he sees when you've missed something right in front of you. It is what it is, as in memory, but so much more. No matter when or where you grew up, Midcentury Boy will intrigue and help to understand a generation that was born under Ike and grown through cultural and social revolutions that are still evolving. I agree with what the previous reviewers wrote, and that this is a must read for Baby Boomers. It's good for boys and girls of the era, and for them to give to their children and grandchildren and friends. Since I was born in the early 1950s, I also remember the events he describes as they happened. I also was lucky enough to know all my grandparents. I played in the houses being built around our little suburb. Needless to say, things changed in the decades after David Hoppe's book. He shows us the seeds of these changes, and offers his usual brilliant insights into culture. Each sentence consists of the perfect words to create a searing image. I look forward to rereading it!
